Application Engineer

We’re looking for a software engineer who wants to participate with a dynamic team creating engaging learning and evaluation software for the educational market and beyond that is  making a real difference in the lives of young people as they embark on their careers.

About the Company

Knowledge Matters, Inc. (KMI) is the leading provider of cloud-based, educational simulations for business (food service, hospitality, retailing, sports management and manufacturing) and personal finance. The company’s Virtual Business line of simulations have been used in over one-third of all the high schools in the United States. The company’s Case Simulations line of advanced simulations are used by leading universities.

In today’s world where facts are available instantly, the competitive advantage goes to individuals who can solve complex problems. This kind of thinking is best taught through rich, detailed, visual simulations which pack years of experience into hours and days. Compared to older, passive methods such as watching videos or reading text, learning through simulation is more appealing to students, easier for teachers, and more effective in achieving useful skill development.

Role

Would you like to work on educational software that students love because it feels like a game and instructors love because students are engaged and demonstrating measurable improvement in academic performance?  As an Application Engineer, you will work with our small but growing engineering team that is delivering engaging visual business simulation software and also the learning management environment that allows educators to review and track student progress and engagement.

Because our online simulations and learning environment are used by thousands of students and instructors daily in high schools and colleges across North America and beyond, we need to deliver exceptional customer service.  Candidates for this position should be eager to work with our technical support department to help diagnose and resolve any problems reported by our users, even if the problem does not involve software that you wrote.

Your role will involve a blend of development work on new products as well as opportunities to dive in deeper to the company’s simulation technology by making enhancements and bug fixes on existing products.  As we continually strive to make our simulations accessible to users with limited vision or challenges with motor skills, some of your work may be from the perspective of such users and may involve using a screen reader to evaluate accessibility of the interface.

While we do have a dedicated professional quality assurance group, the ideal candidate will be somebody who takes great pride in delivering quality code that has already undergone reasonable functional testing prior to being handed to the quality assurance group.

When working on development of new products, the Application Engineer will be working from design and product specification documents from the product management group.  However, our simulations do involve very complex business processes and mathematical models that are difficult to fully specify in the design phase.  It is expected that the Application Engineer will contribute feedback, questions, ideas, algorithms and common sense decisions repeatedly during the development cycle.  Proven ability in these areas and an educational background that involves some exposure to business, education and/or mathematics in addition to a solid grounding in computer science will be helpful.

The work environment offers small company excitement and flexibility combined with big company potential to impact the world.
